Didn't Someone Say

by Kathleen Egan

If you want to make God laugh

tell him your plans?

LaKeshia and Jamahl intended

to have a big wedding

and honeymoon in Jamaica

Dakota asked the Lord

For a new bike for her birthday

And not to let the big kids pick on her

at school

Jim-Bob and Ashley wanted

A few more days of decadence

In the French Quarter

Before returning to Ole Miss

When their flight touched ground,

Mr. and Mrs. Tucker Smithton

Had already allocated their winnings

from blackjack, slot machines, and roulette

Thibodeaux told his wife,

"Cherie, Lord willin' an' the creek don' rise,

I'm gonna get a new boat

so I can catch me a whole mess of crawfish."

On the breath of the Almighty's guffaw

Katrina was born—

At LaKeshia's Grave

White rose shedding a

tear for the dead better to

cry for the living
