Zip Tanka 2

by C W Hawes

the shame   and anger

the old man felt   he remembered at last

his own daughter   had stolen thousands   from him

my supervisor   chewing me out

a second time   today

head down before her   I clench unclench   my jaw

in the middle   of my work

I find I have fallen   asleep

a mug of tea   in hand   my eyes close again

academics   argue

whether or not language   has meaning

but there’s no one   who misunderstands   “you’re fired!”
