Zip Tanka 1

by C W Hawes

why   does my friend not know me

as I know   and understand him

a world of people   all   solitary souls

walking   in the meadow

no paths   just the tall grasses waving

looking behind me   only the grass   waving

what demons   lurk deep within

the dark recesses   of our minds

that horrible place   of our   self-destruction

leaving work   at day’s end

I kick stones   while walking to my car

kicking them   so my hands   cannot pick them up

leaves of autumn   falling falling

and the path leads   on and on

in the far distance   the mountains   are hazy

Autumn Leaves
