Once Upon a Time My Friend

by Donna Wallace

Once upon a time I met

a friend who I loved so

She made my days so wondrous

I prayed she'd never go.

Years passed by and her and I

grew closer day by day

And then one day without a word

my best friend went away.

My tears fell like torrential rains

My face showed my distress

I said good-bye to all my joy

hello to loneliness.

I never once forgot her face

or what she meant to me

and always wondered what went wrong

Did the fault lie within me.

My life just seemed to pass me by

I never smiled the same

I reasoned life was not too kind

a quite unfriendly game.

But then one day, without a hint,

my friend appeared once more

And though I cried and my tears fell

I wasn't sad no more.

She never gave a reason

for dropping out of sight

But I know now that it had to be

That’s just a part of life.

She asked if I'd forgive her

for hurting me so much

There wasn't one thing to forgive

my life blessed by her touch.

We now are close as friends can be

and live from day to day

And I'll accept whatever comes

if she should go away.

I know now life is sometimes strange

We must accept our fate

And write our story day by day—

make our life's story great.

So now we both appreciate

the blessings of a friend

And though we might just part again

our friendship will not end.....
