Beach Haiku

by Sondra Ball

sea swells on sand dunes
lover's kiss, children's laughter
reading poetry
lying on the sand
among ripe bayberry fruit
Venus shining down
against the dark sky
across dark stones, waves, ocean
the lighthouse shadow
a flock of seagulls
circling the pounding sea waves
lone gull falling to sand
waves in the ship's wake
the mountain moving backward
blurring through my tears
rays of streaming light
heat bouncing off ocean waves
feet on burning sand
we walked on the shore
through the grey April snow
melting seagull tracks
naked on the dunes
between sea beats and heart beats
sun on warm bodies
The gull turns his head
and curves his white wings, plunging;
the small fish diving
Sand and bayberries
all summer. The pounding surf.
The taste of your salt.
The warm sea water
washes across bare brown legs
awakens dreams
