Life

by David Harries

What is life I hear you ask
That moment in time before the death mask
make of it what you will
Create more life or stay on the pill

Life oft' starts in a lovers embrace
Passion aroused in garments of lace
We do not think of time to come
'til life is born a daughter — a Son

Life is born — a helpless child
Gentle Jesus meek and mild
Mary and Joseph, a manger of hay
Wise men and Kings visited him that day

A child born of God so the Bible does say
immaculate conception we wonder today
those who believe it's a wonderful thought
from cradle to coffin that's what we are taught

That helpless child suckles on mother's breast
needing constant care — mother gets no rest
knees are crawling, feet are walking, teeth are biting
Before you know it the boys are fighting

The girls are playing with dolls and cuddly toys
Then they reach teenage years — start dating boys
Boys have stopped fighting and now wash every day
Hoping to meet a pretty girl some special day

That pretty girl wearing lace on a special date
Responding to nature's call to progenate
The seeds are sown and life starts again
Runs its chosen path of fate, then after — no pain
