Castles in the Sand

by Oliver Loveday

We go in the morning and build castles
Seashells and coffee cans
Shovels and buckets

The sea gulls walk by
The surf fishermen glance and smile
The wind stings our cheeks with sand
And the ocean waves spray us

We break for lunch and watch
High tide comes rushing in
And washes our castles away
You run through the foam and laugh

Another morning and we start again
I wonder why one bothers
Castles in the sand all wash away
There's nothing left to show for the work

As we start piling up the sand your eyes twinkle
Then I understand that we're building
More than just castles in the sand
We're also building castles in the heart

That no tide will ever wash away.
A-ho!
