Autumn Leaves

volume 7 number 3

to the disunited

by gemma enole ngila

we the people
we are
not only the roots of grass
not hiding our heads in
the sand or the dust or even the grey
concrete in which you tried to bury us but
we are
breaking free
speaking out
showing the colours that were created in us on the
day that life began because
we are
as many as our mothers and grandmothers and
fathers and grandfathers and the millions
who struggled and died so that we might speak our names aloud and
we are
as many as our unborn daughters and granddaughters and
sons and grandsons who will inherit whatever we give our lifeblood to create and
we are
the unsaid becoming songs and the unformed becoming fire and
the undreamed becoming real and
we can never be destroyed because
we speak the deepest truth of the liars who pretend to hide us underground and
before long you will begin to realise you can never oppress us because
in reality you are only oppressing
your own hearts
and we are not only the roots of grass but
the life force that propels the tallest tree to reach its heights and
we know who we are so
we will always be
within
you
