Autumn Leaves

volume 6 number 7

In Wild Winter
by Sondra Ball

In wild winter weather, rain falling on the sea,
the bayberries breaking in the gale,
I walk on the sand and remember you and me
in the days when I thought that all was well.

Then I ran fast and fearless beside the turning tide,
laughing as you leaped into my arms.
We danced together among the sun sparkled waves,
and had no dreams of life's alarms.

In wild winter weather, a knife slipped from its sheath,
and death came dancing on the tide.
There was too much bleeding; there was too much hurting;
and too many people fell and died.

We were all so angry; so very full of fear,
we forgot how to love and be free.
In this wild winter weather, through rain and through wind,
I am walking alone beside the sea.
