A City Kid Reports on Walls
by Sondra Ball

Walls are made to keep grown-ups out.
Every one of us kids knew that.
We dug holes under, climbed over,
and sliced through every single wall
in our neighborhood. It gave us
flexibility. There were times
when we got scolded by old men
or threatened with guard dogs and police.
But it was all worth it the day
we raced across two city blocks
to Stephanie's house before Mom
got her pick-up unto the street.
