A Teenage Love Story
by Joni Angel Pinkney

She stood on the beach,
and he came out of the waves.
He was so like her,
and so opposite to her!
They embraced for a moment,
and the moment seemed forever.
Then a tear fell from her eye,
a tear of joy,
a tear that held all the earth and sky in it.
The tear fell on his shoulder
and he changed!
He became grey and spindly,
like an unborn child!
She stepped back in horror!
"What are you?" she asked.
"This is one of my forms," he said.
"I came to you first in another form.
Now you will see me in my true form."
Suddenly the earth spun under her feet,
and she was looking into the stars.
She lay like that for a long time
til another voice spoke.
"Miss, are you OK?"
She looked up into the face of a gorgeous lifeguard,
and his eyes were like stars.
