Solitary Walk
by Robin Oosterbaan Martinius

His shoulders were squared, as he walked on, alone with his pride
Everyone knew that he'd say, "No" even if they offered him a ride
No one else spoke a word, save my smile and hand raised greeting
A brief smile graced his lips, then he walked on, after our meeting
None knew him well; few of us even knew the young man's name
The moment our eyes met, I knew, and I knew he felt the very same
Sometimes comes an angel to bless us, but is never meant to stay
Somehow I knew I had met just such an angel on that autumn day
Many were the days I saw him go by my house on his solitary walk
"Hello, Reggie," I'd say, "How's your mom?" Hoping he would talk
"She's fine, Ma'am, it's nice of you to ask" he'd say, and walk on by
Was I the only one able to see that he walked though he could fly?
"I baked some cookies today, here—you can eat some as you walk"
"Thank you, Ma'am" but never once did Reggie stop a while to talk
Then, one day, I failed to see him passing as he walked by my door
His Mom said the note was in the pocket of the jacket that he wore
"To my only friend" in delicate hand was written there, in black ink
Through my tears, I read what he wrote, and my heart begin to sink
"All my life, I've walked these streets, as I have gone along my way
Not one other person smiled at me or had even a simple hello to say
Some may have wondered why I walked, but most just didn't care
You looked at me, not through me, and took the time to really see
There's no way you could've known, but it meant the world to me
Now, at last, I have gone home, where I will walk alone no more
When you get here, I'll be there smiling, to meet you at the door"
         Thank you.

         Your Friend,

         Reggie
