Autumn Leaves

volume 6 number 7

An Interlude
by Pam H. Murray

The tranquil forest settled in
For another quiet night.
The canopy of evergreen
Caught the day's last light.

I leaned against a Douglas fir
And felt its centuries
As, overhead, its needles whispered
In the evening breeze.

A quiet footstep close to me
Said I was not alone.
Far off, I heard an owl call.
A field mouse, still as stone,

Seemed out of place among the trees.
I wondered how she came
So deep into the forest where
Shadows played their game.

For hours, it seemed, we two would share
Our quiet interlude
Amidst the evenings whisperings
Our special solitude.
