The Gathering
by Twilah

The spirit of Christmas works its miracles
As around the world people come together.
Hearts are softened, disputes forgotten, as
Paths lead home, regardless of weather.

The young man, young girl, a break from
College, anxiously heading home,
Missing Mom and Dad, even siblings
Since the day they decided to roam.

Families now living in separation put
Aside the past, disallowing their pain
To ruin this day for their little ones
Who have questions now and again:

Why there'll be a stocking missing
Among the others by the hearth this year.
But for today they'll all be united;
Little ones can put aside their fear.

From all directions they come together.
Christmas trees from each window glow.
In the distance, sounds of carolers, softening
Many hearts by their words, as tears flow.

Though some homes will be saddened
By the loss of one who's held so dear,
In their hearts they'll all be together
Defying death, they'll always be near.

So the gathering will steadily continue.
For a day cares of the world will cease
As we reflect on the world's greatest gift.
On this day, at least, there'll be peace.
