Autumn Leaves

volume 6 number 7

The Last Campfire
by Jacqueline Anastasia

Embers glow brightly, cheerfully
Colors warm and inviting
Smoke curls heavenward
With the whorl of the winds.

Treetops bending
Look down upon our camp
See this fire, this foe
And back away from its danger.

Flames reaching upward
To grasp the night
Giving us light and warmth
On our last night with nature.

Stay, whispers the trees,
Stay and see the changes!
Although the fire blazes merrily
It too knows we must go in the morn.

Embers still glow warmly
But can sense the changes
For within this brightness
Lurks the sadness of departure.
