Quaker Meeting in Winter Haiku
by Sondra Ball

Candles burn softly
in the quiet meetinghouse.
outside: dark silence
in the dark spaces
between strangers and lovers
near perfect vision
Inside: worshippers
sit together in silence.
outside: drifting snow.
snow flakes softly fall
after your memorial
friends kissing good-bye
Even in winter
with snow falling the elder
comes to wind the clock
a covered meeting
inside: the warm meetinghouse;
outside: drifting snow
yellow vase on sill
a Y of witch hazel blooms
icicles outside
