Survival 2001

by John Berry

Soon, a birthday,
And I'm wondering,
About here and now.

Some had gone,
To war and came home,
And found it here too.

So, I dance,
For them, our warriors, our people,
I will dance for them, here.

How is it,
That so many are gone,
While I am here?

They say,
Our average survival is 48 years,
How can that be?

I am now, older than that,
And I am, here,
Instead of them.

So, I will dance,
For those, who are gone,
While I am here.

I will dance for them,
Americans all,
All my relations,

For those, who cannot dance,
I will dance for them,
Remembering.
