Good-bye to Kenny

by Barbara Repenning

It was a pretty normal day.
I washed two loads of clothes
And hung them out to dry.
The dogs were lounging
In the shade of the backyard tree.

The teens slept in.
It was Saturday,
A lazy summer Saturday.
The sky was blue
With not many white puffs.

Agnes cut her grass next door,
With her loud old lawn mower.
The baby woke.
He wanted to eat.
He played with Cheerios on his high chair tray.

After lunch, about 3,
Kenny rode his bike by.
He waved hi,
Or was it bye?
He rode down to the river.

He peeled off his shirt
And waded in.
Deeper and deeper.
He went down with the currents.
He never came up.

They say he heard the voices
Again....
And the evening came,
And the stars came out,
And it seemed like a pretty normal day.
