Autumn Leaves

December in New Jersey Haiku

by Sondra Ball

sky, covered with clouds
on a cold winter evening,
cleared by a big hug
the rising full moon
sweeps shadows of bare
maples lightly on the lawn
concrete train platform,
steel escalator, steel train,
small girl with roses
Grey sky; bare branches
moving with the morning winds.
Listen! a song bird
walking on the sands
together with the sea gull
lost in the grey mist
we snuggle closer
in blankets under the eaves,
cold rain washing in
the blinking red light
at Evergreen and Broad Streets:
red flashes in snow
The homeless woman:
no window light welcomes her.
Look up! The bright stars!
The barren north wind
blows a solitary flake
of snow on the street.
wind chimes shimmering
ringing in the cold night air
reflecting moonlight
