Autumn Leaves

volume 5 number 6

Untitled

by Graeme Butler

Get a new bike for the child
blue one with spangling baubles
or the pink one with white tyres

and an aircraft showers flames
and broken glass and lives
101 stories into the streets below

That piece of land should do it
but the little cottage on the hill
could be better, lovely view

And in the streets of New York
fall the dashed hopes and promise
of an innocent peaceful future

Evil's judgement arrived just then
a judgement as worthless as the
dust and fire that blocked out all

of the hopes for a little land
a pretty wee kids bike to play on
in the farm tracks of New Zealand

May every hope and joy that ever
awoke in the minds of sad victims
eventually manifest itself in life

Such a deep tragedy.
