Autumn Leaves

Listen

by Marylou Hayes Choctaw

Listen to the sounds of drums
And the chanting of ancestors from where it begun

When the summer's night air
Seemed filled with despair

From the cries of the past
And the sorrow they cast

The light of the fire danced fierce as they played
Creating ghost dancers from out of the flame

Their message was clear and was met with a fear
To warn off all evil from the darkness so near

The howl of the wolf cried dead in the night
A spirit voice destined to call us to fight

Along came with it, the wisdom of the Owl
To keep all Warriors safe in their prowl

Then the eyes of the Eagle were called to their sight
To keep them watchful deep in the night

Ghost warriors moved out with the Great Spirit to fight
This is our land they shouted and this is our plight

Why did you not just ask us to show you our way?
Instead you lied and led us astray.

With honesty and pride we trusted within
Only to be beaten and broken within

So now hear our drums and our warrior cries
And the spirits of the creatures we call to our side

We have not gone away and we are here to stay
For we are Native Americans who know the way.

We stand with Honor, we stand with Pride
The Great Spirit guides us, we'll not be cast aside.

The spirit and wisdom of all living things are here to guide
And teach all who remain.

So hear our drums and our chants from the past
See the native dancers follow their path.

Why not just ask us to show you our way
For we have never lied nor led you astray.
