Christmas Eve 2000

by Lester Heritage

It was Christmas Eve and I was all by myself.
I was anything but a jolly old elf.
When suddenly there came a knock at the door.
I don't know many people around here anymore.
I thought to myself, "Now who could that be?
If I want to find out, I had better go see."

It turned out to be a lady who lived down the street.
In her arms she held what for me was a treat,
Some cookies and fudge she had made that day.
She said she had more to deliver and could not stay.
So she gave me a big hug and a kiss on the cheek.
I was so surprised I was unable to speak.
She wished me a Merry Christmas and went on her way.
I'm sure God must have sent her to brighten my day.
