Autumn Leaves

Traffic Signals

by Sondra Ball

Along the crooked streets
of the ill-planned city,
sprawling randomly
from one generation to the next,
one century to the next,
traffic lights change from red to green.
Cars and trucks inch along
down narrow one-way streets
made centuries ago
for horses and pedestrians,
And a million men and women
creep hungrily home.
