Autumn Leaves

Orphan

by Susan Humphreys

Clouds are difficult to distinguish
Against a milky grey backdrop
My orphan's emotional silence always descends
Like a jewel-handled dagger

I bleed poetic lyrics of my soul
My sanctuary of solitude
Is both prison and paradise

Only bastard daughters see the Light
Through a black velvet veil
Unspeakable truths poison love,
Threaten dawn ...
... Clouds gather once again

A brewing storm is imminent
For those who offer shelter
Blind, distrustful anger swells subtly
Beneath the softness of my kiss

I dive too deeply into my self
Colors fly by,
Yellow, blue, black
Descending, ending, in icy seclusion

In my unquenchable thirst
My orphan retreats to the gentle song
That composes myself in that moment
Smiling in discordant harmony,
I search furiously for a name:
