A Love Not Known

by Louise Hagan

What would I have called you,
Grandmother I never knew?
Would I have adored you?
And would you have loved me, too?

Am I a bit like you?
You lived such a short, sad while.
Is my hair like yours was,
Is this where I got my smile?

Plains girl, frontier woman,
You faced a life short and hard;
Could I do what you did
With wilderness my front yard?

At 16 was life sweet
When in love, you two eloped?
And when elders caught you
Did despair replace your hope?

Did you cry when you were
Sold to an old man to wed?
Were you scared of him that
Night when he took you to bed?

When he died did you mourn?
Were you glad that he was gone,
So now you could marry
The one you'd loved all along?

I'm glad you wed your love,
But why did you die so soon?
Leaving your kids orphans,
Bereft 'neath the prairie moon.

What would I have called you,
Grandmother I never knew?
Would I have adored you?
And would you have loved me, too?
