Columbus Day in Denver, 2000

by Robyn Scott-McMillen

dear friends and family,
well it is over for now.
close your eyes for a moment....
imagine helicopters, snipers,
mounted police, motorcycle cops, beat cops,
3000 activists (we were educators today also!!)
100 italians,
babies, grandmas, grandpas.
whites, blacks, indians, indios, asians
all together on a concrete battlefield....
remember the saying of the 60s?
what if they had a war and no one came?
well that was the closest i have ever been
to seeing that statement come to being.
it was tremendous,
sad,
cold as blazes,
peaceful,
non violent
yes 225 were arrested and "detained"
cited at the end of the parade and allowed to go home.
i was a part of history today,
and that has not sunk in yet.
i'm sure it will in a few hours.
i am always PROUD of who and what i am
but today it was even more so.
i sang with the drum for 3 hours.
never left its side.
never missed a beat.
we made our point.
even the media was in tears......
and we walked with our heads held high
because we knew we were right.
so my friends
i just wanted to say
thank you for all the smoke and prayers you sent.
we felt it
really we did.
we were and we are STRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
today we were ONE.
peace
and as always for the struggle
