This Could Be Paradise

by Sondra Ball

I walk upon the beach, under clear skies.
The wind blows steady, rustling the sea oats,
twirling emerald leaves of ancient oaks.
A black crow darts down to a tidal pool,
and feeds on stranded minnows and tadpoles.
Two snowy egrets wade in the salt waves.
A crane suddenly peeks its red crowned head
from behind a patch of flowing sea oats.
Blue crabs skitter among the sea grasses.
A brown pelican drops into the sea.
A red tailed hawk swoops from a cedar tree.
Three raccoons walk under palmetto fronds.
A king snake slides slowly between sabals.
I breathe deeply of the salty sea air.

This could be paradise …
except for the dark wave
of oil lapping the shore.
