Museum Pieces

(On the discovery of the bones of American soldiers near Old Fort Erie, 1988)

by Brian Whatcott

The surveyor knows the spider beauty of his geometry
the certain plumbline holding to the web of space

It carries its emotional weight:
A sigh erupts in a cloud of dust
the horses scream while you relate
a mother's grief for her first son's fate.
Earth to earth and dust to dust.
They did then what we still must:
bear the cost when we pay the freight.
