To My Mother

by Sondra Ball

Trapped in a tar paper shack,
in tomato fields,
in hot cars, and dirty tents,

you taught me about wings,
about blue skies,
about distant mountains.

Clothed in a ragged dress,
grey with sweat and food stains,
dirty sneakers on your feet,

you taught me about dreaming,
about singing to the dawn,
about laughing with the wind.
