I Know a Magician

by Sondra Ball

I know a magician with a strong acid heart,
and a ponytail that he wears with a feather.
He lies when he talks to innocent people.
He claims he's an Indian medicine man.
He gets in the heads of innocent people
by talking about lodges and pipes and sage,
things that are sacred and things that are holy.
It's all a deception to lead them astray.

I know a magician with eyes that dart oddly,
and a beaded band that he wears with a feather.
I've met so many innocent people
who believe he's an Indian medicine man.
He leads them to places of tension and terror
while speaking of beauty and gods and love.
Speaking of sunshine, he leads them to darkness.
It's all a deception to lead them astray.
