Changing Griefs

by Sondra Ball

I remember weeping
in my grandmother's arms,
as only the young weep:
soul shattered to fragments
by lost loves, lost visions,
lost friendships, lost toys;
all losses deserving
an equal flood of tears.

Now the days move faster.
Losses come more often.
I hold my tears in check,
picking among losses,
choosing with adult care
what is worth weeping for.
