Child to an Explorer

by Sondra Ball

Have you seen an elephant
walking through the grass,
shaking earth and scraping trees
as it rumbles past?

Have you seen an elephant
big as half a house,
with flapping ears, and ropy tail
and skin grey as a mouse?

Have you seen an elephant
with your own brown eyes?
I may see an elephant, too,
before I die.
