Autumn Leaves

volume 3 number 6

Equinox

by Ed Latham

Quiet at first
in this small valley
The hills around us
comforting and still

The first drum starts out softly
coaxing rhythm to our feet
The chanting is just above a whisper

Then other drums are joining
as the moon climbs through the sky
Shadows disappear and bodies sway

Children hop and giggle
Older people smile
The drums become insistent
The echoes of our heartbeat

Then all are singing loudly
To the tidal wave of feeling
Flowing round about us all
Driven by the drums

And for this precious time
Our souls are joined together
In the glory that is life
And we dance.
