An Anniversary Dance

by Sondra Ball

Above the grey stone
above the pale bones
buried deep in earth;
below the blue sky
and red maple leaves,
we pause for a while
to lift up the pipe.
Bright scarlet leaves
fall through the smoke,
fall on the grey stone
above the pale bones.
Below the blue sky
and red maple leaves,
hazy forms shimmer
beneath the bright sun:
dancing in sunlight,
moving through sunlight
like mists from the earth,
above the grey stone
above the pale bones.
