An Ocean of Light
An Ocean of Darkness

by Sondra Ball

I saw the river flowing
to the ocean through the sand.
It glistened pink and purple
as it poured across the land.
The waves inside that ocean
surged up with sudden light
as the river ran to meet it
free from night.

Another river flowing
through yet another shore
was full of deepest darkness;
no colors anymore.
The waves inside that ocean
surged up with darkest night
as the river ran to meet it
without light.

I stand upon the mountain
and look from day to night.
I see the sea of darkness;
I see the sea of light.
I dance with eager footsteps
toward a distant light
beside a flowing river
free from night.
