I Have Learned

by Sondra Ball

I have learned to listen closely for the silence
underneath the shuffling papers, moving frames,
underneath the sound of children's voices,
and the gentle, constant patter of the rain.

I have learned to listen closely for the silence
underneath the murmur of my thoughts,
underneath my hopes and loves and daydreams,
underneath the tears and terrors I have fought.

I have learned to listen closely for the silence
sounding softly from within the thunder's roar.

I have learned to listen closely for the silence
that sifts slowly into every action's core.

I have learned to listen closely for the silence.
