Henry Ridgeway
(1903-1994)

by Sondra Ball

I,
a child compared to you,
came laughing to your door
to talk about exotic plants
and racism.
We chatted for hours
about people
and pollution
and presidents.
You,
with your lined face,
and slow walk,
knew more of current events
than I could hear;
knew more of history
than I could learn.
You convinced me,
with your gentle patience,
with your firm insistence on perfection,
that I, too, could find a way
to help transform the world.
