You, too, have seen them:
red and yellow leaves
hiding among green;
scouts of autumn
checking out temperature,
terrain, texture.
"Is it time now
for summer's end,"
they ask each other.
But the tomatoes
ripening beside the shed,
the green corn near the fence,
the unripe pumpkins
sprawled beside
and beneath the corn,
all sing in the hot sun,
"Too soon! Too soon!"
