Roads

by Sondra Ball

It is a long road
with turns that can sweep your feet away.
It begins anywhere;
and goes everywhere throughout the land:
past redwood forests,
beside sea coasts, over tall mountains.
You must be careful
when you take that first step outside your door,
for the same driveway
that meets the street outside your small house
can take you away
to birthing chambers, to prison cells,
to monasteries,
to cemeteries with white tombstones
gleaming in starlight.
