Perspectives

by Robert McKay

"The land is to be dug,"
said the conquistador from the height of his horse.
"But when we dig, we only find our gods,"
and the Indian descended into his kiva.
"The earth must be plowed,"
said the settler on his porch.
"But the earth's grass is crop enough for our horses,"
replied the warrior.
"The buffalo must give way,"
cried the cattleman in Abilene.
"But then how will we clothe and feed our children?"
wondered the earnest chief.
"You will have these hills forever,"
promised general and president.
"Who owns the hills now?"
ask the angry young men.
