Autumn Leaves

volume 2 number 5

by Ed Latham

i toss the dice
i pray for luck
they tumble on their way

i see a four
then a three
this surely is my day

Off in the distance, through waves of heat, I see her
Mountain maiden, desert siren, dreamer of my dreams
She beckons, smiling like Coyote
Come see what I've dreamed for you today
And sadly, I remember her name

She's called me here before, to whisper, to cajole
To lead me on across hot sand, promising dreams
She calls again, insistently
Come see what I've dreamed for you today
Follow me, and find water

I walk for hours, through waves of heat, I see her
She dances just ahead of me, always out of reach
She smiles, no need to speak
Come see what I've dreamed for you today
I'm close to death, but I follow

i hold the dice
they burn my hand
i don't know how to pray

i pay my dime
i take my chance
and dream another day
