I Saw

by Elaine Harvey

I saw......
miles of flowers turning their war bonnets to the sun;

green hills rolling and buckling with no regard to
human conveniences;

fields of gold and green and pink more magnificent
than any ring or watch;

a hell of towering red, brown and white sheltering
pastures of life;

a heaven of lush pine and giggling waters;

proof that man can make a sow's ear from a silk
purse full of black granite;

an eagle circle an old man dressed in banners of
hope, sorrow and prayer;

an ocean of corn tended by hands wanting of bread;

smiles dancing on tiny brown legs dipped in
glittering beads;

round pegs living in square boxes with despair
gathering in the corners;

the prayers of a race locked in a brick box,
threatened by the very hands that beg its prayer;

the circle of life with a TV antenna;

the most fearsome gaze, the most sorrowful tear,
the most sparkling smile all written in wrinkles.
