Grandma's Past-times

by Barbara Hilal

She smiled a wicked smile

with two teeth part gold

and half decayed teeth showing

She set in her rocker

guarded the refrigerator

her ice water

We ran upstairs,

we had the opportunity

to go in her room

a usually forbidden passage

Six boxes containing various amounts

all opened, different shades of Coty face powder

Five take home boxes stale toast

half eaten chicken parts

A book on voodoo open

to "how to lose warts"

A box with rocks in it

wrapped like a present
