Higher than a Kite

by Richard Doiron

1

she sees the brown grass

sticking up through the snow

–her unruly hair

2

this strong winter wind

shakes trees as if forgetting

that the leaves are gone

3

treetops in the wind

bumping into each other

–winter's knockout blow

4

reeling in the trout

through the hole cut in the ice

–mother threading needles

5

snowflakes from up high

the little boy heard saying

"higher than a kite"
