Friends

by Carol Atkins

Trees know just what they are doing.

Trees belong in bunches—

great clumps of living green

bending in sync with one another

and the wind—

describing the rim of the field

the coming together of lift and growing

offering a soft and sturdy cadence

and showing us

how to do it.
