Dancing

by Sandy Vrooman

I cannot dance, she said

my feet are caught

in concrete responsibilities

wave your arms

said the trees

I cannot move my arms

they clutch memories

let me move your hair

said the wind

her reply was

I would look messy

watch the world dance

with your eyes

I cannot see

for all my tears

listen to the rhythms

of your heart

I cannot, it is broken

then why do you live

asked the earth

to lessen your burdens

she said

then I will dance for you
