Seasons

by Sandy Vrooman

the year begins rehearsals for ending

testing the sets with different lighting

beginning the chilled nights

which encourage the deep sleep

that period when time stands still

a balance between light and dark

announcing act three in the life

that glorious flame colored prelude

time to fatten up for hibernation

to put life in cold storage or

vacation in the southern hemisphere

where they play at spring

the years recycle but individuals

play the game of life only once

we squander our spring and summer

only to lament its passing in our fall
