Acquainted with the Night

by C W Hawes

I am acquainted with the night

And therefore hold you close

So I can chase away your fright.

I am acquainted with the night

And its Stygian appetite

When the tiniest word's verbose.

I am acquainted with the night

And therefore hold you close;

A willing, gentle acolyte

(For I am acquainted with the night)

Who will minister and excite

And purify what has been gross.

I am acquainted with the night

And therefore hold you close.
