A Christmas Poem

by Donna Covey

It's Christmas time, Lord

I need a little help

I'm feeling tired and overwhelmed

And sorry for myself.

There's shopping, and lots of lists

Help me to remember why

We have this day to celebrate

Lord, just help me try.

Remind me as I prepare all this food

How fortunate we truly are.

There are those who have no home

And go to sleep at night in a car.

As I muddle through the stores

Looking for just the right gift.

Help me smile and think of how

It will give someone special a lift.

There's a tree to decorate

And lights to be strung

Eggnog to make

And a star to be hung

Practice for the church program

I want to do my part just right

Lord fill my heart with the spirit,

The true spirit of light.

Lord, don't let me worry over all the details

Instead, fill my heart with joy

As I go about my hurried labor

Let me remember a little boy.

He slept in a stable

The night that he was born

He didn't even have a bed

Or a blanket to keep him warm.

Oh Lord, don't let me think of Christmas

As a labor you see.

Instead help me to appreciate

What Jesus did for me.

Give me the Peace that was in his heart.

Help me to give as freely as he

Lord, fill us all with the joy of Christmas

From now until eternity …
