Another Side

by Russell Golata

It's been so dreadfully long

this time between heartbeats

How many tears can be shed

before an endless prayer is heard?

This hope rises within my chest

like the sound of my pulse is a

rhythm reaching for this thread

of possibilities left between us

"We are forever," is what you told me,

as you boarded the plane for boot camp.

"Write me everyday you love me" were

The last words I heard you speak.

Every minute of my waking hours

became an open love letter to you

I felt you were here with me as

the war moved me to daily tears.

When your letters to me stopped,

I began to think you didn't care.

Then your parents got the telegram

MIA was really the only thing it said.

Forever we are, and forever I will

Write one letter a day to you, my love.

Hoping that I can touch you somehow

Even if you have moved on, to the other side
